HBBL member Mengsen Zhang explores how individuals' emotional responses differ depending on whether they believe they are interacting with a machine or a human virtually. Zhang found "that humans exhibited greater emotional arousal when they thought the virtual partner was a human and not a machine, even though in all cases, it was a machine that they were interacting with." Mengsen Zhang, a current Ph.D. student, gave a talk at this week's HBBL Meeting, entitled "From two to three: modeling metastable coordination dynamics in the multiagent scenario". She introduced a minimal model for studying triadic metastable coordination capable of reproducing key patterns in experimental data and showed how gradual change in frequency or coupling strength could induce a sudden change in the topology of coordination patterns.

Professor Linda Smith, Chancellors Distinguished Professor at Indiana University visited the HBBL on Wednesday, February 8th. Dr. Smith gave an intriguing lecture that afternoon entitled "The dynamics of environments: the co-development of infant and environment".
Professor Linda Smith, Chancellors Distinguished Professor at Indiana University will give a Lecture on Wednesday, February 8th, at 4 pm in BS-12 Room 303. Professor Smith is one of the top developmental psychologists and cognitive scientists in the world and has received numerous honors for her work, including the APA Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions and the Rumelhart Prize of the Cognitive Science Society (both in 2013).
She is one of the chief proponents of the dynamical systems approach to development and we are hoping she will give us an update on the status of her research which focuses on the early perceptual, motor, and cognitive development.
HBBL member (soon-to-be Dr) Craig Nordham successfully defended his Ph.D. Dissertation on November 4th, 2016, entitled "How interpersonal coordination changes the self: theory, experiment, and adaptive HKB model of social memory". Congratulations!
Dr. Apostolos Georgopoulos of the University of Minnesota recently visited us at HBBL providing valuable comments on short presentations by HBBL members (Kelso, Fuchs, Tognoli, Nordham, Zhang and Stefanescu). He gave a lecture at the Neuroscience Seminar entitled "Informative Neural Interactions" on the same day.

After productive stays at Emory, Florida, and Michigan, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Roxana Stefanescu as a Research Scientist at HBBL. Roxana was an outstanding student at the Center, completing her Ph.D. in Physics under Viktor Jirsa in December 2009. Roxana will bring her special theoretical, computational, and experimental skills to bear on our NIMH grant "Neuromarkers of Social Coordination: A Dynamical Approach".
Dr. Bernat Kocsis, a former Centerite, visited HBBL on September 29th, 2015. Dr. Kocsis is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He gave a lecture later that day entitled "Oscillatory coupling between prefrontal cortex and hippocampus; possible role of nucleus reuniens of the thalamus" at the Neuroscience Seminar.
Dr. Robert Butera from Georgia Institute of Technology (Butera lab) visited HBBL on October 27th, 2015, exchanged scientific ideas with HBBL members from various generations. Later, he gave a lecture at the Neuroscience Seminar, entitled "Selective nerve block using kilohertz stimulation".
Prof. Scott Kelso delivered the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Lecture to The Claremont Colleges on June 17, 2015, entitled "Coordinated Movement: Making the Familiar Strange".

The HBBL received Dr. Robert Levy's visit from Marcus Neuroscience Institute on Oct 14th, 2014. Dr. Levy was the guest speaker at the Neuroscience Seminar. The title of the lecture was "The Present and Future of Neuromodulation". He presented a broad range of intriguing applications of electrical stimulation on the treatment of chronic pain and neurological (related) diseases or symptoms.
Dr. Friederike Hohlefeld is visiting the HBBL from Berlin, Germany. She will present us a lecture in BS-12 room 303 at 4 pm, August 28th. The title of her lecture is "To move and not to move – neural variability and quasi-movements in the Parkinsonian and healthy motor system." Read more.

Emmanuelle Tognoli and Scott Kelso were awarded a patent called the five dimensional (5D) colorimetric (5D) technique. The method is designed to interpret large data-sets with complex spatio-temporal patterns, such as neuroimaging data. Read more.

Dr. Helen Mayberg visited the HBBL today. She discussed with us her work on deep brain stimulation applied to patients with major depression. The exchange was at the cross-roads of complexity and phenomenology, focusing on the complementarity of states and transition at both the brain and behavior levels.
